During Black Maternal Health Week, we recognize the critical work of perinatal nurse champions (PNCs) fighting to reduce disparities in maternal and infant care.
According to new data from NCDHHS, black infants are dying at three times the rate of white infants. Compared to other states, NC has the 10th highest infant mortality rate in the country– which is what makes this a crisis that demands urgent action.
NCDHHS released an updated NC Perinatal Strategic Plan that works to improve maternal health, which includes the work of CCLCF’s Kathleen Bloomfield, Region V Perinatal Nurse Champion. Kathleen supports 14 counties in Southeastern NC through the PNC program, and advocates for implicit bias training, fetal monitoring classes, and more to create better outcomes for pregnant women and infants.
